What Is EMDR Therapy?

EMDR — Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing — is a structured therapy for people carrying memories that still feel raw. Rather than asking you to talk through every detail, EMDR pairs brief attention to a difficult memory with guided side-to-side eye movements or gentle tapping.
The goal is not to forget what happened. It is to let the memory settle, so that recalling it no longer takes over your body. Many people find the work moves differently from traditional talk therapy, because less of it happens through explanation.

EMDR is recognized as an effective treatment for post-traumatic stress by organizations including the American Psychological Association and the World Health Organization. At Clarity Counseling it is one of several evidence-based approaches we offer, and it is often combined with others depending on what you need.

What to Expect in EMDR Therapy

Four stages, at your pace. Nothing starts until you and Cara agree you are ready.

1History and fitYou talk through what brought you in. Cara checks whether EMDR is the right tool, or whether another approach fits better.

2Building steadinessBefore any reprocessing, you learn grounding skills you can use in session and at home. This stage is not rushed.

3ReprocessingYou hold a memory in mind in short sets while following Cara’s hand or a tapping rhythm. You stay in control and can stop at any point.

4Closing and reviewEvery session ends settled, never mid-process. You and Cara review what shifted and decide what comes next.

Is EMDR Safe?

EMDR has a strong safety record and decades of research behind it. It is still real therapeutic work, though, and it is fair to know what that can feel like before you start.

Some people feel tired, emotional or vivid-dreaming for a day or two after a reprocessing session.Distress can rise before it settles. That is expected, and it is why the steadiness stage comes first.EMDR is not the right starting point for everyone — active crisis or certain medical conditions may mean another approach first. You are never required to describe a memory in detail to reprocess it.

Cara will talk all of this through with you in the first sessions, and will say plainly if she thinks something else would serve you better.

What you discuss in session stays confidential. Ask us anything before you commit — the 15-minute consult exists for exactly that.

Most commercial plans and Medicaid are accepted at Clarity Counseling. See insurance and pricing to check your coverage before your first session.

FAQ: EMDR Therapy

You sit comfortably and bring a memory to mind while following Cara’s hand, a light, or a tapping rhythm, in short sets of about thirty seconds. Between sets you say briefly what came up — a word or two is enough. Most people describe it as less draining than expected, because you are not retelling the story.

EMDR has been studied for over thirty years and has a strong safety record. The most common after-effects are temporary: tiredness, heightened emotion, or more vivid dreams for a day or two following a reprocessing session. Distress can also rise before it eases, which is why the preparation stage comes first and why no session ends mid-process. EMDR is not the right starting point for everyone, and Cara will tell you if she thinks another approach should come first.

It depends on what you are working on. A single recent incident may resolve in a handful of sessions. Trauma that built up over years takes longer, and the preparation stage is part of the count. Cara will give you a realistic picture after the first few sessions rather than a number on day one.

EMDR is billed as psychotherapy, so it is generally covered the same way any therapy session is under your plan. Clarity Counseling accepts most commercial insurance as well as Medicaid. See insurance and pricing for the current list, or ask during your free consult.

Yes. EMDR is adapted for younger clients, and Cara is a Registered Play Therapist (RPT) who also uses Play Therapy and Sand Tray. For a child, the right approach is often a blend rather than EMDR alone.

No. This is one of the clearest differences between EMDR and talk therapy. Cara needs enough to help you target the memory, but you are never required to narrate it. Many people choose EMDR for exactly this reason.
